BTWWC/Unit (Back to wall toilet/unit) A floor mounted toilet where just the pan is visible. The cistern is usually concealed behind a wall or unit Bar A unit of measurement for water pressure. 1 bar is equivalent to the force required to push water up to a height of 10 metres Bath Filler This is a tap that mixes hot and cold water through one spout BSM Bath and Shower Mixer. A single tap fitting that has hot and cold inlet and mixes the water in the body of the tap. It has a spout into the bath tub, plus a shower head with a valve that switches between the tap spout and the shower head Bi-Fold Door A door or screen that folds in half to open, and often slides to one side Bottle trap A type of trap used with basins BTU (British Thermal Unit) The heating output required to heat a particular sized room. Room height x roomwidth x room length (in feet & inches) = Total x 5 = BTU Cistern Normally found as part of a toilet, the cistern is a container designed to hold water at atmospheric pressure, used for the flushing system C/CWC Close coupled toilet The most common type of toilet found in the UK, where the cistern is situated directly above the pan Comfort Height Pan A toilet that has a slightly higher pan making use slightly easier for those with mobility issues Corner Bath Corner baths come in various sizes and are often used to give a full sized tub while taking up less wall length Concealed cistern A toilet cistern designed to be used with a wall hung or back to wall toilet, usually concealed behind a wall or unit. Counter top basin A freestanding basin that sits on top of a vanity unit or counter top Double ended bath A bath where the taps are situated on one side (so there is no “tap end”) Dual flush A toilet cistern with the option of a smaller, water-saving flush or a full flush. These are most commonly 3 and 6 litres in volume High level cistern Where the toilet cistern is mounted on the wall, high above the toilet and connected to the pan with a long flush pipe Low level cistern Where the toilet cistern is mounted on the wall, a small distance above the toilet and connected to the pan with a short flush pipe L-shaped shower bath A shower bath with a wider, square-shaped end for showering. Looks like an “L” from overhead Mixer/Monobloc tap A single tap which combines the hot and cold water flows Pan The part of the toilet that is also referred to as the bowl Pillar taps Single taps which deliver either hot or cold water, but not both Pivot Door A pivot shower door swings open on a supporting upright bar or brackets P-shaped shower bath A shower bath with a wider, curved end for showering. Looks like a “P” from overhead Quadrant This usually applies to shower enclosures or shower trays which are a triangular shape with a curved front edge. Rimless/Rimoff Usually applies to a pan that has no rim therefore easier to clean. Roll top bath A type of freestanding bath, usually with a rolled lip around the rim of the bath to help when getting in and out. Semi pedestal basin A basin that is attached to the wall and sits on top of a short pedestal that is also attached to the wall and used to conceal plumbing. Semi recessed basin A basin designed to fit into, but also overhang, a furniture unit Short Projection Sanitary ware that has been designed for small spaces. A short projection basin will be small from front to back, a short projection toilet will be narrower from the wall to the end of the rim. Shower bath A multifunctional bath which can also be used with a shower. Specifically designed shower baths have a wider end in which to shower and come with a bath screen. Single ended bath A bath where the tap(s) are situated at one end. Sliding Door A shower door which consists of two or more panels which slide to one side to allow you in and out. Slotted waste For use with basins that have an overflow hole. Thermostatic mixer valve Usually found on showers, this valve mixes hot and cold water to maintain a constant temperature. Thermostatic radiator valve A radiator valve that opens and closes automatically to maintain a set temperature. Vanity unit A furniture unit that contains storage and a basin. It may be floor mounted or wall hung. Walk in shower enclosure A shower enclosure without a door, but with a cleverly arranged set of panels to keep water in. Wall hung toilet A toilet that is attached to a mounting frame behind a wall or unit, so the cistern is concealed and the pan is suspended above the floor.
